Andrew Garfield Reaffirms Support for Gay Spider-Man Portrayal

Actor Andrew Garfield has reaffirmed his long-held view that the character of Spider-Man could be portrayed as gay, stating that anyone should be able to see themselves behind the iconic mask. The comments, made in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, revisit remarks he first made over a decade ago during the promotion of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Garfield, who played Peter Parker in the 2012 and 2014 Amazing Spider-Man films and appeared in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, described his original 2013 suggestion as "an exercise in rebellion." At the time, he had mused about reimagining the love interest Mary Jane Watson as a male character and questioned why Peter Parker could not be written as exploring his sexuality. He specifically named actor Michael B. Jordan as someone he would have loved to see in such a role. Now, looking back on those comments, Garfield confirmed his position remains unchanged. "Yes, of course," he said when asked if he still stood by his views. He explained that his core belief is that the universal appeal of Spider-Man lies in his ability to be a vessel for anyone.
