Anambra State and Obi Clash Over Financial Legacy
A public dispute has intensified between the Anambra State Government and former Governor Peter Obi over the state's financial legacy at the end of his tenure in 2014. The current administration claims Obi left behind significant debt obligations, while he maintains he handed over a surplus with no outstanding liabilities. The Anambra State Government, through Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation Law Mefor, stated that eight external loans contracted during or inherited into Obi's administration had an outstanding balance of 92.35 million, valued at approximately N127.37 billion as of June 30, 2026. The loans were for projects including malaria control, education, healthcare, and erosion management. Mefor said the state continues to service these debts, paying hundreds of millions of naira monthly. In response, Peter Obi has rejected the allegations, asserting that he left Anambra with over 75 billion in savings and investments, including approximately $155 million in foreign currency. He stated that his administration cleared more than N35 billion in historical gratuities and arrears and left no outstanding salary, pension, or gratuity obligations.
