Amorim draws criticism for comparing Milan pressure to Man United

Published 17 September 2026

AC Milan manager Ruben Amorim has drawn criticism after publicly comparing the pressure and squad adaptation challenges at his new club to his previous tenure at Manchester United. The comments came following Milan's 2-0 home defeat to Benfica in the Europa League on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, which marked Amorim's first loss since taking charge in the summer. In a post-match interview with Sky Italia, Amorim stated he felt the same pressure at Milan as he did at United, where he departed in January 2026 after inconsistent results. He suggested his current squad was better suited to his preferred three-defender system than his previous one. "I think this team is a little bit different, they are more accustomed to working with three defenders, they are a little bit faster, a little bit stronger," Amorim said. "Of course, I don't have the clear characteristics that are perfect at this moment, but it is impossible when you take on a new team to have those perfect characteristics right away.
