American Idol Relocates Production From Los Angeles to Georgia

Published 16 September 2026

American Idol is relocating its production from Los Angeles to the greater Atlanta area ahead of its 25th season, producer Fremantle confirmed. The move marks a significant shift for the long-running music competition series, which has been broadcast from Los Angeles since its debut in 2002. The relocation is primarily driven by Georgia's tax incentive program, which offers up to a 30% tax credit for unscripted productions that spend at least $500,000 in the state. This threshold is considerably lower than California's recently expanded incentive program, which requires a per-episode budget exceeding $1 million for competition shows to qualify. The departure represents another blow to Los Angeles's struggling production landscape. According to data from permitting office FilmLA, the city saw a nearly 13% drop in film shoot days from April to June compared to the same period last year. Unscripted production has been particularly affected, with reality TV shoot days plunging 40% year-over-year in the second quarter. American Idol joins a growing list of reality and game shows leaving California for more favorable tax environments.
