Alaska teen rescued after days on capsized boat in Bering Sea

A 15-year-old boy was rescued by a fishing vessel after surviving for nearly three days on the overturned hull of a skiff in the frigid Bering Sea, while his older brother and cousin died following the boat's capsize. The teen, identified by family as Derek Parker Aghnaanga, was spotted by a U.S. Coast Guard aircrew on Monday morning near St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, before being pulled to safety by the crew of the fishing vessel Northwest Explorer. The group had departed from the village of Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island on Friday for a halibut fishing trip and was expected to return early Sunday. When they did not return, family members reported them missing Sunday evening, prompting a search by Coast Guard aircraft and helicopters. The Coast Guard located the overturned skiff on Monday morning, approximately four miles east of the island, and deployed a life raft and survival equipment before directing the nearby Northwest Explorer to the scene.
