AI Leaders Clash Over Pace of Development at Dreamforce

At Salesforce's Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, a sharp divide emerged among leading artificial intelligence executives over the pace of the technology's development. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang publicly rejected calls for a slowdown, advocating for rapid progress and engineering-based safety, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called for pauses, third-party audits, and heightened security measures. Huang, speaking to an audience of thousands, framed the debate as a false choice between speed and safety. He argued that AI companies should "run as fast as you can" and rely on existing engineering practices and market forces rather than new government regulations. He advised companies to pause individual products if safety issues arise but stressed the broader industry should continue without hesitation. "It's a false choice," Huang said. "You could definitely have both at the same time." His comments followed a phone call with President Donald Trump at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles the previous day. On speakerphone, Trump warned that an AI slowdown would benefit China and promised administration support for Nvidia's efforts.
