Admin Asks Court to Restore Voter Citizenship Check

The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to reinstate an expanded federal system designed to help election officials verify voter citizenship, a move aimed at bolstering election integrity ahead of the midterm elections. The Department of Homeland Security's Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE, system was modified to allow bulk searches of voter information by linking it with Social Security records. Solicitor General D. John Sauer urged the Supreme Court to lift a lower court order that has blocked the expanded system. The administration argues that the previous version of SAVE is an older, more cumbersome, and less reliable process. According to the administration, the modified system had been processing over one million requests daily and had verified more than 65 million voters across 26 states, flagging approximately 28,635 potential noncitizens.
