ADC warns political violence could mar 2027 elections

The African Democratic Congress has warned that escalating political violence and intimidation against opposition parties could compromise the credibility of Nigeria's 2027 general elections, calling on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to publicly account for stalled investigations into attacks on its members. The warning came at a press conference held at the party's national headquarters in Abuja on Monday, addressed by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi. He said the party had compiled a memorandum documenting incidents between July 2025 and September 2026 across Kaduna, Kebbi, Ekiti, Cross River, Rivers, Edo, Osun, Kogi and Enugu states, including attacks on political meetings, destruction of party property, assaults on participants and threats against citizens because of their political preferences. Abdullahi cited a February attack on the ADC secretariat in Benin, Edo State, and reported gunfire at the residence of former Edo governor and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun during a gathering of political leaders.
