Actress Hayden Panettiere died from fentanyl-laced pill, DEA investigates

Actress Hayden Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, after taking a pill believed to be oxycodone laced with fentanyl, according to law enforcement sources. The 36-year-old was found unresponsive in a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment and was pronounced dead shortly after. The Drug Enforcement Administration is investigating whether a longtime drug dealer in Los Angeles supplied Panettiere with the fatal pill. Sources indicate she may have obtained several black-market prescription drugs from this individual before traveling to South Carolina with her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, on August 15. Hickerson reportedly found Panettiere unresponsive and administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, before paramedics arrived. Police and paramedics responded to a 911 call and found her in cardiac arrest. She was declared dead at 2:31 p.m. after resuscitation efforts failed. The Greenville County coroner has completed an autopsy, but a formal cause of death is pending toxicology results, which could take up to 12 weeks. No signs of trauma were found on her body. No arrests have been made in connection with her death.
