52 Singaporeans arrested in China for pyramid scheme

Fifty-two Singaporean citizens have been arrested and detained in China's southern Guangxi region as part of a law enforcement operation targeting alleged pyramid scheme activities. The detentions, revealed by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and police on Friday, September 4, 2026, are believed to represent the largest number of Singaporeans detained overseas simultaneously. Chinese authorities have not yet disclosed specific details of the allegations against the individuals, and investigations are ongoing. Singapore's Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sim Ann, stated that the Singapore government is engaging with Chinese counterparts to gather further information. She emphasized that while Singapore provides consular assistance to its detained citizens, it respects the judicial processes of other countries and expects reciprocal respect for its own laws. Singaporean diplomats have visited all 52 detainees three times to check on their welfare, provide consular assistance, and facilitate communication between the detainees and their families.
