109 migrants dead after boat capsizes off Djibouti

Published 11 October 2026

At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, died after a boat carrying people from Djibouti to Yemen capsized near the Djiboutian coast, the International Organization for Migration said. The agency reported that about 116 people were missing as search-and-rescue operations continued on October 11, 2026. Survivors told the IOM that the boat overturned near Guhere, north of the port town of Obock, during the night of October 8-9. The agency said more than 80 people survived; all were Ethiopian nationals. It reported that 64 survivors were receiving assistance at its migrant centre in Obock. The IOM said Djiboutian authorities were continuing search-and-rescue operations, while its teams were working alongside local authorities to provide emergency aid. The reported numbers remain provisional as the search continues and authorities work to establish how many people were aboard and what happened to those still missing. Of the 109 bodies reported recovered, 52 were men, 42 women and 15 children, the IOM said. The children included nine girls and six boys.
